Description
The Whale spoon is a sweet little spoon, useful as baby’s first spoon, a gorgeous trinket bowl for your precious delights, or to hold your salt and spices in a fun way.
It’s small at approximately 7.5cm long and 5cm across at the widest (tail) point. There will be variations in the depth of the bowl, but generally I make these fairly shallow so the little ones can grip and shove into gob easily :D
Whale spoons are carved firstly using a bandsaw to rough out the shape, and then various chisels and knives to refine the shape until it resembles a spoon :) Faceted knife finish which is lightly sanded, burnished and sealed with my spoon butter, a mix of coconut oil and beeswax, and then buffed to a shine afterwards.
Finishes include natural, or acrylic paint with exposed facets, I usually use Pthalo Blue and White because it’s a personal favourite, but feel free to request any acrylic paint. For a baby’s spoon though I would leave the finish natural. (Pictured with a natural finish are White Beech and Camphor Laurel. Pictured with a painted tail are Silky Oak, Red Cedar and White Beech). Please let me know the finish and timber type in the custom options section. If left blank, The Whale spoon will be made with whatever timber is to hand (generally White Beech, Silky Oak or Camphor Laurel) and tail will be left natural.
Care for your spoons: Wash with warm water and detergent when needed. Never place in the dishwasher. Dishwasher = sadness :( From time to time you can re-sand with a light grade sandpaper (for example 320 grit), and re-oil using a food safe and non-oxidising oil (for example food grade mineral oil, grapeseed oil, coconut oil, or my spoon butter!).
